On 10 July the 8 TFW raised the headquarters flag over George AFB. In doing so the 8 TFW replaced the 32 TFW, itself existing only between 1 April – 25 July. The primary assigned mission was to train personnel in the new F-4C.

Beginning back in May four Fighter Interceptor Squadrons (FIS) were assigned to the Wing with the purpose of assuming the F-4C mission from the four TFSs. The 433 FIS may have been assigned as early as April; the 431 FIS was assigned on 18 May; the 68 FIS was assigned on 16 June; and the 497 FIS from Torrejon Base, Spain, headquarters for the 65 Air Division. After the activation of the 8 TFW the FIS designations were changed to Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS).

When the 8 TFW replaced the 32 TFW there were only two F-4C assigned to the 32 TFW: 63-7519 and 63-7530. Both of these aircraft were ‘returned’ to the 15 TFW, MacDill AFB, Florida, on 19 September only to be reacquired by the 8 TFW on 22 October 1964.

November Movements

Deliveries directly from the McDonnell Aircraft Company (MacAir) factory in St. Louis, Missouri, commenced on 1 November. By the end of the year two squadrons would be equipped with the F-4C.
