January

On 2 January the 25 TFS lost F-4D 66-8784, call sign Banyan, during a 1300-hours LORAN validation mission over Section F (TIGER HOUND), Laos. On station at 16°-37’N/106°-26’E, the aircraft was shot down by AAA (probably combat associated). CAPT John T. West and 1LT Ronnie G. Lindstrom are listed as KIA.

Attrition replacement during the first half of the month all came from the 49 TFW, Holloman AFB, New Mexico. On 5 January: 65-0597, 65-0612, 65-0642, 65-0677, 65-0693, 65-0705, 65-0786, 65-0609 arrived on 14 January.

Attrition replacements during the second half of the month included two aircraft on 19 January: F-4D 66-7609 from the 4 TFW, Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina; and 66-8788 from the 33 TFW, Eglin AFB, Florida. F-4D 66-7503 was transferred in on 28 January from ‘nearby’ 366 TFW.

F-4D 66-7609 was transferred on 2 February to the 366 TFW. F-4D 66-7764 was transferred in on 17 February from the 432 TRW, taking F-4D 65-0794 in exchange on 23 February.

The first F-4E assigned to the 8 TFW, listed in the USAF aircraft movement data base, was 76-0335, assigned during the early part of February then transferred (returned) to the 366 TFW on 13 February. This was likely a weather or combat damage related divert rather than a planned event.

On 18 February the 435 TFS lost F-4D 66-7526 (1,323 hours), call sign Banyan, during a 1000-hour MUDY mission over a road segment in BARREL ROLL-D. The aircraft was hit in the forward fuselage by 37-mm AAA and crashing at 19°-29’N/104°-03’E. MAJ Thomas E. Gillen, pilot (possibly hit) is listed as Crash-KIA. CAPT R.S. Dotson was recovered by USAF helicopter.

F-4D 66-7472 was inducted into the SMAAR logistics unit on 23 February and remained there through 24 March at which time it was transferred to the Ogden AMA depot.

On 19 March the 435 TFS lost F-4D 66-8696 (1,516 hours), call sign Wolf 06, on a 1800-hours FAST FAC mission over Section E, Laos. On station the aircraft was hit in the center fuselage by 37-mm AAA at 17°-29’N/105°-44’E; crashing at 17°-32’N/105°-44’E. 1LT Dennis G. Pugh is listed at MIA, presumed dead on 28 January 1982. On 20 March 1LT D.P. Townsend, flying A-1E 52-135154, of the 602 SOPS/56 SOW, Nakhom Phanom RTAB, call sign Strike 6, was show down (17°-41’N/105°-53’E) while flying the 1800-hours RESCAP for Wolf 06. The following day MAJ E.M. Hudgens, flying A-1J 52-142065, call sign Sandy, same unit, during the 1200-hours RESCAP for Wolf 06, was shot down at 17°-31’N/105°-42’E, listed as Crash-KIA. CAPT R.A. Rash, surviving aircrewman in Wolf 06, was finally recovered with major injuries by USAF helicopter.

The first F-4D was detached to the OOAAR Korat RTAFB on 21 March, from where it was sent to the Air Asia depot on 30 March.

October

In early October Typhoon XXXXX hit the South Vietnamese coastline, requiring most flying assets to evacuate to the Thailand air bases.

Two aircraft were transferred to Winds in South Vietnam: 66-8691 went to the 366 TFW on 15 October; 66-8693 went to the 12 TFW on 20 October. Two aircraft, 66-8761 (ex-432 TRW) and 66-8805 (ex-405 FW) were acquired from the OOAAR Clark AB facility on 26 October.
