Wolf Pack Unit Awards
Presidential Unit Citation
![]()
During Desert Shield, and Desert Storm, no US military unit qualified for the award of this nation highest unit citation, the Presidential Unit Citation. This citation is equal to the individual award of the Air Force Cross.
Now, that sounds extremely surprising, considering the deeds that were done during the Gulf War, and I dont want to sound demeaning to the boys and girls that served in the gulf, but you have to read the Department of Defense regulations to fully understand the full scope of the award.
The key language reads as follows.
The unit must have displayed such gallantry, determination and esprit de corps, as to set it apart and above other units participating in the same campaign. The entire unit must show a degree of heroism equal to the second highest valor award; for the Air Force this is the Air Force Cross.
The members of the 8th Tactical Wing's Wolf Pack earned not one, not two, but three Presidential Unit Citations during the Vietnam years. The periods are as follows:
First period: 16 Dec 1966-2 Jan 1967
Second period: 1 Mar 1967-31 Mar 1968
Third Period: 1 Jan-1 Apr 1971USAF Outstanding Unit Award with Combat Valor Device
